Every year, Simon Fraser University recognizes alumnus whose achievements are outstanding. Historically a thoroughly stodgy, elitist event, this year we repositioned it simply as “an opportunity to engage with our brightest stars”. The thinking was, if all SFU alumni were represented by the some six thousand lights in the night sky, visible to the naked eye, these five outstanding individuals are supernovas among them. The connections we draw between these exceptional individuals are akin to the constellations humankind has made by drawing lines between celestial bodies since the beginning of time. The use of the night sky as a metaphor for SFU alumni became an accessible, universal image that resonated with our target audience: all metrics were exceeded.
